Yoga Tip: Tumeric – Yogi’s Healer

0

Dubbed The Yogi’s Healer, Tumeric is a yellow root widely used for 5,000 years by yogis to increase flexibility in muscles, joints & heal injuries. In Ayurvedic & Chinese Medicine this root is used to improve digestion, strengthen immunity, decrease inflammation, add luster to skin & instill mental balance. As a food supplement it can be purchased online or at health food stores loose or in capsule. Most health benefits of tumeric are linked to its volatile oil pigment called curcumin. Trust me, there’s no missing curcumin. With its pungent smell & vibrant yellowish-orange color, when curcumin comes into contact with your skin, it takes a lot of rubbing with soap & water to remove. Fortunately the benefits of curcumin far outweigh the smell & extra hand washing! Check it out: 1. Curcumin has the ability to destroy mutated cancer cells inhibiting the spread of cancer. It can’t cure cancer, but it’s a ‘lethal assassin in the fight’ especially against colon cancer. Studies show lower rates of colon, breast, lung & prostate cancer when tumeric is frequently used. 2. Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory powers. It’s nature’s version of an NSAID. Curcumin is fantastic for pain associated with fibromyalgia, arthritis, tendonitis & other inflammation related injuries. 3. Tumeric is a natural antiseptic / antibacterial agent. If you apply tumeric to cuts, burns and abrasions, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see how quickly the injury will heal. 4. For Alzheimer’s, tumeric assists in the process of anyloyd plaque buildup in the brain. Bisdemethoxycurcumin, the most active ingredient in tumeric root, enhances the activity of the immune system in Alzheimer’s disease. 5. Curcumin enhances Glutathione within human cells. This is a huge advantage for autistic children. They typically have Glutathione deficits. Glutathione is ‘nature’s natural squeegee’. It assists in the removal of toxins from your system. 6. Curcumin has been utilized by DAN! (Defeat Autism Now) Doctors to combat yeast/candida overgrowth in the gut. It’s a natural anti-fungal. If you’re the parent of an autistic child and you’d like to try curcumin prior to using a prescription drug for combating yeast, look into Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy’s Enhansa (leesilsby.com). It’s an enhanced absorption curcumin supplement. It’s a unique product. 7. Curcumin helps lower cholesterol. It instructs the liver cells to increase the productions of mRNA messenger proteins which help create receptors which allows the liver to remove more LDL (Bad) cholesterol from the body. How to use tumeric? I add the orange powder to my homemade salad dressings & guacamole. To maintain its healing properties I try to avoid cooking tumeric. Here are other dishes to add tumeric: Egg, tuna or chicken salad. Get to know the taste of this spice before you go crazy pouring it over your food. Tumeric has an aromatic flavor that needs to be stirred well into any dish. As a society we love our magic bullets. Tumeric is a strong natural agent that can help to open up the joints. It’s for this reason that I decided to mention it. Of course these other benefits might be relevant for you or someone you love.
